Auchterarder is a village and parish in south-west Perth and Kinross, Scotland, lying north of the Ochil Hills. Auchterarder is a popular tourist resort and is well known as the location of The Gleneagles Hotel, there are a variety of other holiday accommodations in the area. Auchterarder is a historical village dating back to the 13th century, when it was founded by Gilbert, Earl of Strathearn. The ruined Castle is though to have been established by Malcolm Canmore (1058-93) as a Hunting Lodge. The whole settlement was destroyed in 1715 by Jacobite soldiers. The village soon re-emerged with a thriving textile industry. The Heritage Museum houses Scotland’s only working textile steam engine. Interesting buildings include the Parish Church 1784-1811, the Town House and the Aytoun Public Hall. There is an elegant fountain, erected as a memorial to Captain Aytoun 1870-72, in recognition of services to the town. The Main Street is known as the ‘Lang Toon’ as it stretches a mile and a half long, lined on both sides with a variety of shops, Inns, Coffee Houses and Library. Holiday activities include Mountain Bike runs and Fly Fishing. Auchterarder has its own18-hole Golf course and nearby is the Gleneagles Golf Course.
