Elstow is a picturesque village just south west of Bedford whose lovely high street has stark black and white timbered buildings from a bygone age, and thatched cottages, enough to keep artists engaged for ages. Elstow was the birthplace of John Bunyan who wrote ‘Pilgrims Progress’. The church of St Helena and St Mary was once part of a Monastic building that dated back to the 11th Century. The Medieval masterpiece of 15th Century Moot Hall is now a Museum where historical period pieces of fine furniture are proudly displayed. For the lovers of the great outdoors there is plenty to choose from, such as Harrold - Odell Country Park set on the banks of the River Ouse, complete with Water Meadows, two lakes with an abundance of wildlife and stunning scenery, or perhaps hire a bicycle and explore Rowney Warren, this impressive woodland is thickly planted with pine trees and 100year old Oaks. Or maybe Woburn Abbey where the scintillating façade as you approach is a mere sample of the interesting treasures held within, set in 3,000 thousand acres of deer park, or take a journey of discovery around the Safari Park where the wonders of the Animal Kingdom is at it’s best with big cats, bears, wolves and mischievous monkeys.
