Ellesmere Port is to be found on the Wirral Peninsula in the North West of England, a town that utilised local resources on which to grow. Ellesmere Port used to lie on the South side of the River Mersey however decisions taken back in the late 1700’s resulted in the construction of the Manchester Ship canal alongside which Ellesmere Port now lies. The purpose of the canal was to link the River Severn at Shrewsbury with the River Mersey at Whitby – the resulting canal therefore connected the Rivers Dee, Severn and Mersey and it was Thomas Telford who designed the whole of this canal system. At the time the area was known as Whitby Locks and Whitby Wharf and by 1795 the area came to be known as Ellesmere Port as it was the “port of the Ellesmere canal” which later became the Shropshire Union Canal. Today Ellesmere Port is popular with its out of town shopping centre, just off the M53, known as Outlet Village where there is a large range of retail facilities and designer stores, other attractions include an aquarium in which you can walk under the water, the Boat Museum on which Ellesmere Port built its history and the UK’s first 3d cinema complex was built. The town centre has also been modernised in recent years and with the arrival of new technologies there are new office blocks appearing all testament to the
