This ancient market town is believed to have originated as a 6th century Saxon settlement, with the name supposedly derived from 'the settlement on the gravel'. Sir Isaac Newton attended school in Grantham, as did William Cecil, the first Lord Burghley, who became the most powerful statesman in the land during the reign of Elizabeth I. Today the town is renowned as the birthplace of Lady Margaret Thatcher, Baroness of Kesteven, Britain's first woman Prime Minister.
Grantham was recorded as a Royal Manor, belonging at one time to Queen Edith, wife of Edward the Confessor (1042-1066) and appears later in the Domesday Book among William the Conqueror's lands. Royalty often stayed in Grantham and in 1290 Grantham was a resting place for Queen Eleanor's funeral procession, although the resulting Eleanor Cross disappeared in the 17th century during the Civil War. The town received its first Royal Charter in 1463.
Grantham grew considerably during the 18th century as a result of the Great North Road, becoming an important coaching centre midway between London and York in the stagecoach era. Later, the canal age and the subsequent Industrial Revolution brought the warehouses, wharves and factories which formed the foundations of the modern town.
Many famous visitors and Royalty have stayed in the town over the centuries. Travellers such as Daniel Defoe remarked that 'this is a neat, pleasant, well-built and populous town'. Charles Dickens stayed at the former George Hotel , which he mentioned in Nicholas Nickleby, and he also reportedly wrote Bleak House whilst in residence.
Grantham features a variety of places of interest to visit within the town itself and a number of important stately homes and castles are located in the near vicinity, making the town a good touring base for a fascinating stay amongst the treasures of South Kesteven. Population 35,000
