The North London district of Stamford Hill within the borough of Hackney sits a little south of Tottenham, with Hornsey and Hornsey Vale to its west, the area essentially a rural one until the end of the 18th century when it began to be developed by those seeking some room away from the increasingly crowded capital proper, many of the new residents moneyed. By the last quarter of the 19th century its transport connections, train, tram and road, were such that it had been swallowed into the sprawling city. Some of the early residents of the suburb were Jewish immigrants, including the patriarch of the Montefiore family, and that first wave was followed by another at the end of the 19th century, which allowed an infrastructure of synagogues, specialist food shops and other institutions to develop to serve that community which remain important today, roughly 10 per cent of the population being Jewish with an estimated 50 synagogues in operation, and men in traditional Hasidic dress being a common sight on the streets. Stamford Hill is however a very mixed area, with those of no religion and of the Muslim faith as numerous as its Hasidic population, and the largest grouping Christians.
