Caherdaniel is a small and very pretty coastal village located on the Ring of Kerry. Visitors to Caherdaniel are perfectly placed to explore this magnificent scenic drive, a circuitous route winding more than 100 miles around awe-inspiring mountain and coastal scenes, lakes, waterfalls, rivers and picturesque hamlets. Caherdaniel also stands on the Kerry Way, a lovely, age-old walking route. Indeed, there's a great sense of history about the village, which is surrounded by ancient forts, stones, copper mines and an abbey dating back to 700AD. Just outside Caherdaniel, Derrynane House - the ancestral home of political leader Daniel O'Connell, set in what's now a wooded national park - is open to the public as a museum. On a fine day, families may well stop off at one of Derrynane's beaches, said to be among the most beautiful in Ireland, with an imposing mountain backdrop. Watersports including sailing, fishing, kayaking and canoeing are popular around Caherdaniel, and visitors will not forget a boat trip to the two Skellig islands - a World Heritage Site five miles out to sea. There are plenty of opportunities, too, for land-based activities such as pony-trekking, horse-riding and hill- walking, and golfers are within an easy drive of several courses.
