Englefield Green
The village is famous for its village green, the scene of an Annual Fair.
The village green which is owned by the 'Crown' has the unusual distinction
of having its own committee to safeguard aspects of village life, and is a
popular venue for cricket in the summer.
The great architectural feature of Englefield Green is Royal Holloway, part
of the University of London.
It was one of the first women's colleges in the country when it was opened
by Queen Victoria in 1886.
It is one of the most impressive Victorian structures anywhere around London
and was built between 1879 and 1887 by Thomas Holloway, whose genius for
advertising and marketing his patent medicines made him a fortune which he
used in part to build his college.
Englefield Green merges, on the north, into Coopers hill, it offers a
marvellous panorama of Runnymede and the Thames, this land is was donated to
the Natural Trust.
