Nestling in the rolling countryside between the counties of Staffordshire and Derbyshire the village of Tutbury is actually in the county of Staffordshire, just south of the River Dove. Tutbury is probably most famous for its castle overlooking the river, tracing its history back to the Iron Age it is believed that the present castle is located over an Iron Age fort. Today much of the castle is in ruins but worth visiting this castle that once was home to Mary Queen of Scots – actually home is wrong as Mary was actually imprisoned here. The castle is also home to a number of ghosts, has numerous events here and is does offer some great views. Today the village and its population of around 3,000 enjoy Tutbury’s picturesque charm, from the castle to its museum (known locally as the Soup House) there is always something to delight and please around every corner. Its church, St Mary’s Priory Church, dates back to the late 11th century with its rounded apse and whilst it contains many original features don’t be fooled by the stocks outside behind the railings, they are a reproduction. As we said at the start, Tutbury is located in the rolling countryside and with that comes a bonus for any visitor to the area when they visit Tutbury – so much to see and do and we haven’t even mentioned Tutbury Glass, maybe you should visit and have a look for yourself.
