The origins of the Harlequins Rugby Football Club date back to the formation of Hampstead F.C. in 1866. In 1870 they were renamed Harlequins Rugby Football Club following a meeting of members. The name needed to be changed to reflect the wider area players had come from but the HFC monogram needed to be kept. The word Harlequin was found in a dictionary and has been the team name ever since. Some members did not wish to become part of the newly named club and split to form a new team known as Wasps. After forty fairly nomadic years Harlequins were invited to use Twickenham as their home ground by the Rugby Football Union. This became their home until eventually it acquired some land across the road from Twickenham. On this land was built the Stoop Memorial Ground which has since become the clubs home. Honours at the top level have been limited for the club, it has won the trophy which has since become the Anglo Welsh Cup on two occasions (1988 and 1991). In recent years the team has ground shared with the London Broncos Rugby League team, which since 2005 has changed its name to Harlequins Rugby League, even adopting similar kit to the Rugby Union side. The teams are, however, separately owned.
