Commonly known as Leicester Tigers, Leicester Football Club was founded in 1880. The use of the word Football as opposed to Rugby in the name was common in the 19th century, as Rugby was generally referred to as simply 'football' in those days. The club nickname of The Tigers was first used in about 1885. In 1892 the team moved to Welford Road, where it still plays today. The stadium now holds 16 ,815 spectators. In 1926 Leicester made the unusual move of using letters instead of numbers for its forwards. In 1931 this was extended to the whole team and became a long standing tradition of the team. The beginnings of the modern era started in 1968 for Leicester when they appointed progressive coach Chalkie White, a former player of the team who demanded high standards of fitness and tactical play. This led to the development of a strong Leicester team throughout the 1970s, which reached its first major final in 1978. Since then Leicester has won the English Premier League title on seven occasions, the first being in 1988. The Tigers also bought home the Heineken European Cup on two successive occasions in 2001 and 2002. In addition to these titles, the successful Leicester team has won what is now known as the Anglo Welsh Cup on six occasions.
