In 1863, the Bradford Rugby Club was formed. The team won its first major trophy when it took the Yorkshire Cup in 1884. In 1895, along with cross town rivals Manningham, Bradford was among the 22 clubs that broke away from the Rugby Football Union to form the Northern Rugby Union. It was a move that led to the creation of Rugby League. Manningham took the initial Northern Union title but began to run into financial difficulties soon afterwards. Manningham switched to Association Football and became Bradford City, joining the Football League in 1903. That same season, Bradford Rugby Club took the Northern Rugby Union title. Just a few years later, however, Bradford Rugby Club turned its back on Rugby and also switched to Association Football. Bradford Rugby Club was then replaced in the Northern Union by a newly created club, Bradford Northern. Bradford Northern achieved some success prior to the Super League, having won the Challenge Cup three times in the 1940s. However, the club has transformed into a major success following the creation of Super League. A further two Challenge Cup victories, four Super League titles and three World Club Challenge titles having been added in the modern era under the name the Bradford Bulls.
