Formed in 1932
Wigan Athletic F.C., also known a 'The Latics', were the sixth attempt at a stable club in Wigan. Previously there had been Wigan County, Wigan United, Wigan Town Wigan Rovers and finally Wigan Borough who folded the year before Wigan Athletic was formed in 1932.
In the 1934-35 FA Cup they beat Carlisle 6-1 in the first round, which is still the record win for a non-league side over a league side in the FA Cup. In 1953-53 they played an FA Cup tie against Hereford to a crowd of 27,526, a record attendance for a game between two non-league sides at a non-league ground.
Wigan attempted some 34 times to gain election to the Football League. In 1968 they were founder members of the Northern Premier League but even tried to gain election to the Scottish League Second Division in 1972. The team was finally elected to the Football League in 1978.
In 1995, the club was taken over by David Whelan, a local millionaire whose widely ridiculed ambition was to take the club to the premiership. In 2005, Whelan silenced the unbelievers as Wigan was promoted to top flight football for the first time in its history.
