Tradition has it that in the fourteenth century soldiers from Ludlow Castle came here not only to practice archery but also to match their horses. There is certainly a record of racing in 1729.

The course retains not only its Edwardian character but also its Club atmosphere. Though now a National Hunt course, it did not have jumping until the mid-nineteenth century . Today Owners and Trainers from all over the Country come to race their horses over the same ground.
