Attraction in Paxton

Built by John Adam in 1758 for a dashing young laird, Patrick Home of Billie, Paxton House is among Britain's finest 18th century country houses boasting 12 period rooms, Robert Adam interiors and the pre-eminent collection of Chippendale furniture in Scotland. The magnificent Picture Gallery, the largest in any Scottish Country House, exhibits 80 paintings from the National Galleries of Scotland and features masterpieces by Raeburn, Wilkie and Lawrence alongside works of local interest. The fully restored working Georgian kitchen is complete with active charcoal stoves and baking oven and the renovated nursery, a visual insight into a child's room of previous years, features an early Victorian doll and Victorian cradle.

Overlooking the majestic River Tweed, Paxton House lies at the heart of 80 acres of woodland, parkland and gardens with many walks and trails. Enjoy rare shrubs, rhododendrons and herbaceous borders, well garden, putting green, croquet lawn, two adventure playgrounds, picnic areas, plus red squirrel and riverside bird hides. Visitors can explore the Net Fishing Museum, housed in the restored boathouse on the riverside. The new Rod Fishing Museum, just off the courtyard, tells the story of The Ellem Fishing Club, the world’s oldest rod fishing club. The exhibition includes interactive displays and full scale models of the traditional and contemporary costume.
