Restaurants in Harlow
Over the 15 years that Stephen and Anne-Marie Taylor have been running this long-established Old Harlow restaurant they've earned themselves a reputation for good service and worth-venturing-out-for food. Centuries-old exposed beams, red bricks and inglenook fireplaces do atmospheric justice to The Gables evocative name. While wooing mainly the traditionalist (escalope of pork with Norfolk sauce), the short Modern English menu does cater for the less conservative foodie (aubergine layers with Provencal sauce topped with grilled goats' cheese). King of the menu is the grill section of prime, no-nonsense cuts of sirloin steak, liver, lamb etc. Big wine list, much of it French, and a strong selection of vintage port and brandy. Weekdays attract an ageing crowd, leaving weekends to 30 and 40-somethings and their families.
