The Arched House, in which Thomas Carlyle was born on 4 December 1795, was built by his father and uncle (who were both master masons) in 1791. Carlyle was a great writer and historian and one of the most powerful influences on 19th century British thought.
The interior of the house is furnished to reflect domestic life at Carlyle's time and also on show is a notable collection of portraits and his belongings.
