31st of October - Halloween

31st of October is the 304th day of the year

Halloween:
Halloween has over the last two or three decades gone from the Vauxhall Conference of British festivals to Premier League, undoubtedly because of the influence of American movies and television, with plenty of support from the major supermarkets. We did though have Mischief Night here – especially in the North - on October 31 already. It is odd that almost every year Christian spokespeople can be heard bemoaning this 'pagan’ festival which actually originated from a celebration of All Souls Eve, a time in the Christian calendar to commemorate the dead. The parties, very traditional bobbing for apples etc all add to the national gaiety – as do children trick-or-treating, so long as they make the effort to dress as witches or something similarly spooky.
