25th of October - St Crispins Day
25th of October is the 298th day of the year
St Crispins Day:
For a man born in 3rd-century Rome Crispin has a remarkable resonance for the British, or at least the English and Welsh. Like his twin-brother Crispinian with whom he was martyred Crispin was a shoemaker. They fled to what is now France together, and according to one legend spent some time in Faversham in Kent, but they met their end in 286 in Gaul – firstly thrown into a river weighed down with millstones round their necks, then, as they managed to survive that, beheaded. Of course the great patriotic power of the words St Crispin’s Day (actually mainly Crispian in the text) comes from their emphasis in Shakespeare’s Henry V, the battle of Agincourt fought on that day, the king rousing his troops with stirring words about the fight to come.
