10th of October - Old Michaelmas Day

10th of October is the 283rd day of the year

Old Michaelmas Day:
The change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in this country in 1752 brought us back into line with most of Europe, but it also doubled the observance of various special saints’ and feast days, celebrated on the usual date (for St Michael September 29th) and the day that previously would have been September 29th, that is October 10th.
Michael was popular in Britain as captain of heaven’s forces, with a multitude of churches in England especially dedicated to him. September 29th is a quarter day, but of course 10th October can’t have the same status; many fairs and folk customs followed the ‘old’ feast day of this archangel, however, among them Pack Monday Fair in Sherborne. October 10th was traditionally the day after which blackberries were supposedly poisonous, Satan for some reason having got at them.
