23rd of August - St Bartholomews Eve

23rd of August is the 235th day of the year

St Bartholomews Eve:
Bartholomew was one of the twelve apostles, alternatively identified as Nathaniel. Little or nothing is known about his life for certain, though he is supposed to have undertaken a missionary expedition to India, and in some traditions is credited with similar journeys to Ethiopia, Parthia, and Mesopotamia. He was horribly martyred in Armenia, flayed alive and then either crucified or beheaded. In England St Bartholomew’s Eve once saw a scholarly tradition enacted in various places: gifted grammar school pupils would meet to debate or otherwise enter a contest of wits with rivals, the winners rewarded for their abilities.
