15th of August - Assumption Day

15th of August is the 227th day of the year

Assumption Day:
The Feast of the Assumption commemorates the ascending into heaven of the Virgin Mary at the end of her life. According to a ruling of Pius XII (with all the weight of papal infallibility behind it) as late as 1950 she was alive when the Assumption took place, a belief argued about since the 4th century at least by the various Christian Churches and sects. In many predominantly Catholic countries the date is a public holiday. Quite why August 15th was chosen or emerged as the date to celebrate this event is unclear, suggestions being that it was related to the dedication of a significant church linked to the event, or that it is the actual anniversary of the event itself – rather unlikely given even believers cannot agree on a year let alone a day for her death, and that they argue for two possible sites for it – Jerusalem and Ephesus.
