12th of August - Glorious Twelfth
12th of August is the 224th day of the year
Glorious Twelfth:
Since 1831 when The Game Act was passed August 12th has – except when it falls on a Sunday – marked the beginning of the red grouse season (and in some case that of ptarmigan). So glorious if you like shooting and are minted enough to afford time on the grouse moors, but perhaps less so if you are a red grouse or ptarmigan. Other game is still off-limits until later in the season. On the grouse moors this is the most important day of the year, participation in the shoot that day a mark of prestige, and a badge of commitment to field sports. Hunt saboteurs and animal rights activists in general take an alternative view
