22nd of July - St Mary Magdalene Day

St Mary Magdalene Day:
July 22nd is the feast day of St Mary Magdalene (Magdalene meaning she came for the town of Magdala). She became one of the closest followers of Jesus after he had rid her of seven demons, taken by some to mean she had been cured of a serious illness by him, and by others to indicate that she had lived an unclean life previously, i.e. had been a prostitute, though this is not specified clearly in the bible. She attended the crucifixion and was the first of the faithful to find the tomb empty after the resurrection, an act that places her high in the ranks of Christ’s followers. There are many legends attached to her later life, including that she became the leader of the Church for a time, and that she fled into exile in Provence, where she died; there is even one tale of her body lying on Iona.
