My wife and I stayed at the Newbury Manor Hotel recently during a regular visit to Thatcham. I can honestly say it was one of the worst managed hotels we have ever encountered. The en-suite bathroom smelt stale and stagnant and an electrical pump intermittantly activated every three minutes during the entire night. The staff were totally unhelpful and even unwilling to listen to our complaint the following morning. Breakfast was slow, cold and served with no smiles. It was a relief to exit the hotel and join the A4 back to Henley. R. Benjamin.

I stayed at the Newbury Manor hotel from 4 days and I enjoyed every moment of it. The staff were fantastic, the food was great, and the room was very comfortable and good value for money. I would reccommend this hotel to anyone, and I will defiently be coming back

My wife and I have stayed at hotels of various types all over the world, but I can only recall one or two that were as disappointing as The Newbury Manor. I had booked one of their top suites as a birthday surprise for my wife - at a discounted rate, but definitely not cheap. One of the taps in the bathroom didn't work, the door closer on the suite door slammed the door shut, one of the blinds in the room only lowered halfway, the TV in the bedroom would not stay turned towards the bed. The barmaid in the hotel bar had great difficulty understanding a request for brandy. The girl who checked us in didn't offer details of time or location for breakfast, and when asked, wasn't sure of the times. At 7.55am on Sunday the fire alarm went off. I phoned reception and was told it was a false alarm. It rung for several minutes - I later found out that none of the staff on duty had known how to turn it off. My wife ordered haddock for breakfast. It arrived stone cold. We pointed this out. A new one was cooked, but no explanation or apology offered. No condiments on the breakfast table. When we checked out, no-one asked whether we had enjoyed our stay, or thanked us for our custom. On 22nd November I wrote to the hotel's manager, asking for his comments, but have had no reply. Most of the above was relatively minor, but the overall impression is of poor service, poor training and poor management. Overall rating 2/10.
