Studied agriculture at Cambridge, developed interest in entomology. Set up animal behaviour department at Madingley. Became first chair of ethology in 1966. Strong interest in conservation, researched into birdsong. Published Learning and Instinct in Animals (1956). Elected FRS in 1951.
