Trained as pianist but decided to enter the theatre. First appearance in The Merry Wives of Windsor (1904). Toured USA for four years in Shakespearean repertory. Member of Annie Hornimans’ Repertory Company in Manchester and worked at the Old Vic, London. Played title role in Saint Joan (1924). Created DBE in 1931.
