Trained at RADA, worked in theatre during 1960s and 1970s. Became well-known as Jack Regan in television series The Sweeney (1974-78), in Kavanagh QC (1994-98) and Inspector Morse (1986-2001). Films included The Grass is Singing (1982) and Cry Freedom (1987). Was married to Sheila Hancock.
