Born 1648. Died 1724 - English dramatist.

Successful with tragedy Cambyses in 1671. Remembered for his rivalry with Dryden. Made poet of the City of London in 1691. Adapted A Midsummer Night’s Dream as The Fairy Queen in 1692 with music by Henry Purcell. Also wrote short comic pieces.
