Emigrated to Great Britain in 1965. Midnight’s Children (1981) earned him international reputation. Awarded the Booker prize for Shame (1983). The Satanic Verses (1988) led to a fatwa being issued against him. Published a number of works since including Imaginary Homelands (1991) and The Ground Beneath Her Feet (1999).
