An entrepreneur credited with inventing the spinning frame in 1769. He built the world’s first water-powered cotton mill in 1771 at Cromford, Derbyshire (now Derwent Valley Mills), which was notably one of the catalysts for the industrial revolution. He was knighted in 1786.
Buried in the church he had built.
