Born 1784. Died 1865 - English statesman.

Entered Parliament as MP for Horsham in 1807. Made Secretary of War in 1809. Ceased to be a Tory in 1828, saw himself as a Liberal. Out of office when Tories came to power but reinstated as Foreign Secretary in 1846. Given role of Home Secretary in a coalition administration. Became Prime Minister in 1855. Re-elected in 1859. A further election in 1865 increased his majority but Palmerston died before he could begin his new term.
