Born Helen Lydia Mironoff. Joined Royal Shakespeare Company in 1967. Film debut in Herostratus (1967). Other films include The Long, Good Friday (1979), Cal (1984) and The Madness of King George (1994). Won Golden Globe award for The Queen (2006). Best known on television as policewoman Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect.
