Born 1948 - English writer of novels, short stories and screenplays.

First collection of stories, First Love, Last Rites (1975) followed by The Comfort of Strangers (1981) and The Innocent (1990). Won Whitbread award for The Child in Time (1987). Won the Booker Prize for Amsterdam (1998). Awarded CBE in 2000.
