Educated at Hulme Grammar School and Manchester University where he obtained a first in his bachelor’s degree, then an MPhil, and eventually a PhD in high energy particle physics. Between school and university, however, Cox recorded and toured with the band Dare as their keyboard player, later also working with D:Ream for a time. Cox is a senior academic at his alma mater, whose research now involves work at the LHC, and simultaneously a very familiar face (and much-mimicked voice) on TV presenting programmes on science and scientists, and appearing on various panel shows where his humour and ease in front of the camera are at a premium.
