Adam Sedgwick

Died on 27th of January 1873

Sedgwick’s initial studies were in Mathematics at Trinity College Cambridge, but he is celebrated for his work in geology, given a professorship in that field at Cambridge in 1818. Working with Sir Roderick Murchison he identified the Devonian system. Sedgwick was one of Charles Darwin’s early mentors, but was vehement in his opposition to the latter’s theory of evolution.
