Rice studied at Queen’s College, Cambridge and was called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1871, but his calling was literature, first as editor (and owner) of Once a Week, then as a novelist and short story writer, working in tandem with Walter Besant. More than a dozen books came out of their collaboration.
