John Opie

Born in St Agnes, Cornwall
Born on 16th of May 1761
Died on 9th of April 1807

The son of a carpenter, Opie showed early promise as a mathematician, and then as a painter. His talent was recognised by a local doctor, who bought him out of his apprenticeship and eventually took him to London, where Opie’s talent caused a stir in artistic circles. He was primarily a portraitist, commissioned to paint many important figures in his time, especially in the literary world, but also painted historical pictures like Murder of Rizzio. The Royal Academy made him a professor in 1805 He is buried in St Paul’s.
