BOOK WINESTEAD HOTELS

Andrew Marvell
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Winestead, East Yorkshire
Born on 31st of March 1621
Died on 16th of August 1678

It is as a metaphysical poet (and as a friend of Milton) that we know Marvell today. The majority of his verse was only published after his death - in his own time he was more noted as a politician, serving as MP for Hull in several parliaments. He tutored a ward of Cromwell and praised the Lord Protector in verse, but was overall a fair-minded republican who having observed the failings of Charles I and Charles II took against the monarchy in general and the Stuarts in particular.
