1808-1882 English designer, writer & civil servant


As a civil servant he played a key role in the introduction of the Penny Post and is credited with the design of the world’s first postage stamp the Penny Black. In 1843 he introduced the world’s first commercial Christmas Card. He managed The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations at The Crystal Palace, London, from 1st May to 15th October 1851 which earned him the CB and he was knighted in 1875.
