From a decidedly artistic family (her father an author, one great uncle a celebrated artist, and one of her sisters a novelist), Beatrix Lehmann was best known as an actress though she also for a time was director and producer of a theatre company, and published two novels and some short stories. As an actress she appeared mainly on the stage in a career that began in 1924, and occasionally worked in films (including The Spy Who Came in from the Cold) and on TV (including Dr Who).
