Laithwaite was educated at Kirkham Grammar School, then after war service in the RAF at Manchester University, where he was involved in the Manchester Mark I computer project, and was appointed Professor of Heavy Electrical Engineering at ICL. He became celebrated for his work on the linear induction motor, technology that has been taken up more actively beyond Britain, as has the magnetic levitation technology which he also pioneered.
