Studied at RADA. Stage debut in Revolt in a Reformatory (1934). Enjoyed West End success, made film debut in The Way Ahead (1944). Performance in Brief Encounter (1945) led to great popularity. Nominated for Academy Award in Sons and Lovers (1960).
