Won a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge. Became the BBC’s first “Radio Doctor” during WWII. Elected Liberal MP for Luton in 1950. Became Postmaster General in 1955 and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1957-61). Appointed chairman of the Independent Television Authority in 1963 and chairman of the BBC in 1967, retired from the BBC in 1972.
