Born 1949 - Broadcaster, gardener and novelist.

Began work as an apprentice gardener at Ikley Council. Went to study a Diploma in Horticulture at Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Worked as a supervisor before leaving to begin a career in journalism. Made a few television appearances as a horticulturist in the programme Nationwide. Became well known as the host of the long-running show Gardener’s World. Has also presented Ground Force, Songs of Praise and British Isles: A Natural History. Has written a number of gardening books, novels and a biography.
