Trained as a painter and has his first exhibition at the Lord’s Gallery in 1964. Began making his own short films before achieving success with The Draughtsman’s Contract (1982). Subsequent films included Drowning by Numbers (1988), The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989) and Prospero’s Books (1991).
