Born 1809. Died 1903 - English meteorologist.

Was Superintendent of the Department of Meteorology and Magnetism at Greenwich for over 30 years. Produced tables for the calculations of dewpoints of the air. Best known for the balloon ascents he made to measure temperature, dewpoint and wind at different heights. Founder member of the Meteorological Society (1850) and the Aeronautical Society of Great Britain (1866). Elected FRS in 1849.
