Born 1779. Died 1839 - Novelist and pioneer in Canada.

Travelled for his health (1809-11) where he met Byron. Published an account of his travels Letters from the Levant and a number of novels including The Ayrshire Legatees (1820), The Provost (1822) and The Entail (1823). Went to Canada in 1826 where he founded the town of Guelph and played a role in organising immigration.
