Was world singles champion at table-tennis in 1929. Took up lawn tennis when he was 19. As a amateur he won the singles title in the Australian Open in 1934, the French Open in 1935, Wimbledon in 1934, 1935 & 1936 and the US Open in 1933, 1934 & 1936. He helped Great Britain win the Davis Cup beating France in 1933. Turned professional in 1937 and moved to the United States taking up US citizenship in 1938.
