Born 1931 – Athlete and politician.
One of the pacemakers when Roger Bannister ran the sub-four minute mile.   Set a world record for the 5000 metres in 1954.  Won the first BBC Sports Personality Year award in 1954.  Became a newscaster before moving into politics.  Served as Parliamentary Private Secretary and Junior Education Minster before losing his seat in 1966.  Re-elcted in 1969 but retired from politics in 1974.  Active supporter of African charities. He was knighted in 1995.
