Joined the Royal Navy in 1872. Served in the Egyptian War in 1882, appointed to the Admiralty in 1888. Playing major role in modernising the Navy. Appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Fleet at the start of WWI, organised defences against German submarines. Made Admiral of the Fleet in 1919. Was Governor of New Zealand from 1929 to 1924. Created an earl in 1925.
